Recognizing that our families are encountering many different schedules and situations,
Bishop Ryan Catholic School Virtual Classrooms present the best combination
of accessibility and flexibility for our students.
Virtual classrooms give our students the chance to connect with faculty in five different ways:
live classes, recorded classes, live collaboration during posted office hours,
and guidance through chat and email.
We would prefer to have our students in a living classroom setting, but with the current situation
and concern for safety and health, we are working hard to make this a productive learning experience demonstrating the hallmarks of a Bishop Ryan education.
Lion Mail Packets
The best practice is to review information provided in the Lion Mail packets as soon as they arrive home on Fridays. In this way, families have the opportunity to see the scheduled meetings, assignments and tests for the upcoming week and any possible conflicts between family availability and school scheduling. Families are also welcome to use the weekend days to work ahead, if and where necessary.
Online Assignments
All online assignments will have one of three submission deadlines:
Mondays at 5:00pm
Wednesdays at 5:00pm
Fridays at 8:00am
Teachers are not required to have assignments due at every deadline, but if they have an assignment due, it must use one of these deadlines.
Tangible Assignments
Any assignments where physical materials must be turned in will be due on Fridays during the Lion Mail drop-off/pick-up times of 7:30am-9:00am and 5:00pm-7:00pm. To provide for the health and safety of our staff and faculty, tangible assignments will not be accepted outside of these times for any reason.
Tests
Tests do not necessarily adhere to the same submission timeline as assignments. Any student who consults the upcoming weekly schedule and recognizes a conflict in being able to complete a test or exam within its scheduled window must contact the teacher before the time that the test window opens to make arrangements for a testing opportunity that works better with the student's situation. Once the testing window opens, there will be no opportunity to arrange for test rescheduling.
Live Classes
To prevent crossover between live class opportunities, teachers will only offer live classes during one of their regularly-scheduled class times on the Bishop Ryan Catholic School schedule. All live classes are recorded for later viewing in the case that the meeting time is not convenient for an individual family’s situation.
It should be noted, however, that there may be times at which a student has two live classes occurring at the same time. In that case, the student needs to make a prudential decision about which live class to attend. The student would then watch the recording of the other live class and utilize the teacher's office hours for personal interaction concerning the lesson. While this format may not allow students to be part of every live class offering, it does provide the best combination of synchronous and asynchronous learning options. Since we know that it is impossible to continue school through the use of only synchronous learning, this is the best solution available to us given the circumstances.
Teacher Availability
Teachers will be readily available during their live classes (for students in those specific classes) and their office hours (for students in all of their classes).
Teachers can also be contacted through their team chat forums and via email, with the following expectations:
-Any communication posted between 8:00am and 3:00pm on listed school days will have a response
before 5:00pm that same day.
-Any communication posted after 3:00pm on listed school days will have a response within
24 hours.
-Any communication posted after 3:00pm on a Friday or on a day followed by a posted school vacation
day will have a response by 3:00pm on the first day school is back in session following the weekend or
vacation break.
