Rev. Henry Schneider passed away October 14th, 2020, in Minot. He was born March 8, 1927, in Ray to Henry William Schneider, Sr. and Theresa (Tessar) Schneider. He graduated from Ray High School, attended Crosier Seminary in Onamia, Minnesota, then continued his studies at Catholic University, receiving a master's degree in education. He also received a master's degree in guidance from the University of North Dakota, Grand Forks. Father Schneider was ordained to the priesthood on June 4th, 1953, and his first assignment was assistant pastor at St. Leo's in Minot.
In 1955, he was named principal of St. Leo's Elementary. He also served parishes in Berthold, Des Lacs, Foxholm, Questad and Tioga before being named pastor of St. John the Apostle in Minot. He also served as the chaplain of the Minot Serra Club, and upon his retirement, Fr. Schneider celebrated daily Mass at Somerset Court.
Father Schneider enjoyed reading and telling stories of past trips that he had taken, and one would often see him walking and biking all over Minot. Those adventures and his iconic bicycle became the foundation for many discussions and lessons at Bishop Ryan.
Father Schneider had a deep love for Catholic education and was passionate about making that available to all children. He was one of Bishop Ryan's greatest supporters in his lifetime, and an endowed scholarship has been founded in his memory to ensure that his legacy continues on forever. If Father Schneider impacted your life in any way, please consider a memorial to Bishop Ryan Catholic School to support the scholarship that bears his name.
It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Sister Dorothy Helbling, a beloved mathematics and religion teacher at Bishop Ryan from 1958-1974. Sister Dorothy spent 73 years in the religious life, and she passed November 1st at the Mount Saint Joseph Motherhouse in Maple Mount, Kentucky. She was a beloved teacher and inspiration to many Lions, known for her excellent math instruction and the significant impact she had on her many students.
Sr. Dorothy Helbling, 1928-2020
Sister Dorothy Helbling, an Ursuline Sister of Mount Saint Joseph of Maple Mount, Kentucky, died November 1st, 2020. She was in her 73rd year of religious life.
She was born June 17th, 1928, to Anton "Tony" and Mathilda “Tilly” Helbling in St. Anthony, North Dakota, where her grandparents were homesteaders. The family came from Germany, in the Alsace-Lorraine area, and then migrated to Odessa, Russia before coming to America.
When Sister Dorothy was a senior in high school, her family moved to Mandan, and even though there were no Ursulines in Mandan, Sister Dorothy had already made up her mind that she "wanted to be like my first-grade teacher, Sister Ildephonse" in St. Anthony, and she decided to enter the convent.
She entered the Ursulines of Mount Calvary one thousand miles away in Belleville, Illinois. Her first ministry was grades 5-8 at St. James School in Millstadt, Illinois, and she spent a year at Holy Rosary School in Fairmont, Illinois, before returning to North Dakota.
She taught math at St. Mary’s in Bismarck (1954-1958), then moved to Minot when Bishop Ryan opened, teaching here for 16 years. Following her career in teaching, she served as superior of the Ursuline Sisters of Belleville for 24 years.
